Visual ingenuity is not uncommon for the Pradhan’s of the Gond tribe of Madhya Pradesh who make the Gond paintings. They smear mud paste on the floors, doors, and walls of their homes and then paint motifs on them with a brush fashioned out of bamboo, using colors made from natural materials. In the early ’80s, some of the Pradhan Gond painters started painting on paper and developed a most unique style of painting using bright colors and simple forms, decorated with dots and lines. Subsequently, this style was popularly known as Gond painting. The Gond painters love nothing better than to narrate stories behind their paintings. Painted freehand these two-dimensional paintings reflect the artists’ perception of life.
